Points of Merger

My work focuses on how shape and colour come together to create a sense of something almost recognized, almost grasped, almost understood.

By using the tools of colour and form and refraining from using representation, my goal is to bring viewers to the edge of recognition. I want to use their emotional reaction to colour to keep them engaged while their brain tries to make sense of the shapes they see.

Much of what we see as humans is absorbed automatically and interpreted almost instantaneously. While this is an excellent survival tool, I hope to take advantage of this instinctive reaction but also slow this process down.

Colour appeals to the heart and, just like a snippet of a piece of music, is immediately attractive or repulsive. If attractive, the viewer will try to make sense of the shapes. If the colour is discordant or repulsive, the shapes must be strong enough to appeal to the brain’s love of complex relationships, and cause the viewer to be intrigued by the anomalies presented.

The points of merger are where my search for compelling non-representation meets with another person’s successful search for meaning or connection.

I hope my work lives in that fractious state between the known and the unknown, the controlled and the uncontrolled.

Mon travail est centré sur le point où les formes et les couleurs donnent un sens à quelque chose presque reconnu, presque perçu, presque compris.

Mon but est d'amener les observateurs à l'orée de la perception en utilisant la couleur et la forme. Je veux utiliser leur réaction émotionnelle à la couleur pour les garder engagés pendant que leur cerveau tente d'interpréter les formes qu'ils voient.

Beaucoup de ce que l'humain voit est absorbé automatiquement et interprété presque instantanément. Cette aptitude est un outil de survie important et je veux tirer avantage de cette réaction instinctive tout en ralentissant le processus.

La couleur fait appel au cœur et, comme un morceau de musique, peut être attirante ou répulsive. Si elle est attirante, l'observateur tentera d'attribuer un sens aux formes. Si elle est discordante ou rebutante, les formes doivent être assez fortes pour faire appel à la propension du cerveau à traiter les relations complexes et assez fortes aussi pour amener l'observateur à questionner les anomalies présentées.

Les points de fusion sont là où ma recherche d'une non-représentation captivante rencontre la recherche fructueuse d'un sens ou d'une connexion par une autre personne.

J'espère que mon travail vibre dans cet état fractionné entre le connu et l'inconnu, entre le contrôlé et le non-maîtrisé.
