Traces – Michèle LaRose

Wellington Street Art Gallery, Toronto, November 15 – December 5, 2011

Michèle LaRose offers a series of paintings that present traces of people and times past. In a departure from her typically strong chromatic paintings, Michèle has been working with layers and veils of white to suggest the passage of time. These paintings seem to reflect details of people, places, events we have either known or not known that are now obscured to us in the mists of time. So whether a painting reminds us of the people who made prehistoric cave paintings, a childhood place or a friend recently departed, we can find only traces of their presence and are left with many unanswered questions. Despite the lightness of white, we feel its weight in these queries. Its opaque nature reminds us that we are all going to enter this state, where only our traces will remain.
